Play: It's Not Just Fun and Games

As children head back to school, the time set aside for play seems to disappear. According to a survey conducted by Dr Pepper Snapple Group's Let's Play initiative, 56 percent of parents say busy schedules are a major barrier to play.
Play is an important part of a child's physical, emotional and social development. In fact, kids who play are found to be healthier, happier and better performers in school. As children's schedules become packed with activities during the school year, it is important to make sure they are getting enough active playtime each day to help them grow into happy, healthy adults.
Here are some reasons to keep kids active during the school year:
Play promotes social skills. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, just more than a quarter of students surveyed participated in daily physical education classes. Kids have fewer opportunities to be active during the school day, so it is important to supplement their schedules with after-school activities or sports throughout the year. Team sports are a great opportunity for children to foster friendships and connect with kids from different backgrounds. Keeping your children active through sports gives them the opportunity to maintain a physically active lifestyle while also making new friends.
Play heightens intellectual development. Education in the classroom allows children to learn and grow; however, physical activity outside of the classroom is also important for a child's development. Studies show that physical play has been linked to helping kids think creatively and create connections with others through the process of sharing, negotiating and resolving conflicts. Such skills are vital for a child to learn and can be easily taught through active play.
Play enhances motor skills. Playgrounds serve as a great space for kids to explore and have fun in a safe environment while challenging and refining their motor skills. Interacting with play equipment helps build motor skills and improves self-control and coordination.
Play relieves stress. As kids get older, schoolwork becomes increasingly difficult and stress levels about the workload begin to rise. In fact, 46 percent of parents polled in the Let's Play survey said that a focus on academics was one of their kids' biggest barriers to play. While academics should always be a priority, giving kids the opportunity and time to play can relieve the stress associated with school and allow them to simply have fun.
You can learn more about the importance of play and get tips and advice on how to incorporate active play in your child's everyday life at LetsPlay.com, where you can also nominate a community group, nonprofit or school to receive a new playground or sports equipment grant courtesy of Let's Play.

Baby Clydesdale Featured in Super Bowl XLVII Commercial

Super Bowl commercials are the best part of the Sunday events, and Budweiser always delivers. Check what's planned for this year!
Budweiser has launched its first-ever Twitter account – www.twitter.com/budweiser. The account went live earlier this week.
The iconic brand marked the occasion with another "first" involving the Budweiser Clydesdales – tweeting the first photo of a member of the elite "Budweiser Clydesdales Class of 2013," a beautiful 150-pound baby born the morning of Jan. 16. It was the brand's first-ever Tweet.

Using #clydesdales, Budweiser also is asking Twitter followers of @Budweiser and Facebook friends to help name the young equine star, who will be seen by an estimated 110+ million viewers Sunday during Super Bowl XLVII.

"This newest member of the Budweiser Clydesdale family was 7 days old on the day this part of the Super Bowl commercial was filmed," said Jeff Knapper , general manager of Clydesdale operations. "A star was truly born on Jan. 16."

More than 30 baby Clydesdales are expected to be born this year at the 300-acre Warm Springs Ranch, the state-of-the-art breeding facility for the Budweiser Clydesdales in Boonville, Mo.

On Super Bowl Sunday on Feb. 3, the Budweiser Clydesdales will appear in a new 60-second spot, "Brotherhood," which chronicles the bond a Clydesdale foal shares with his trainer. Partially shot at Warm Springs Ranch, "Brotherhood" will take the Clydesdales advertising into new territory by providing a new level of access to their early years.

This is the Clydesdale's 23rd Super Bowl spot since first appearing in a big game spot in 1986.
In addition to the baby foal born this month that will appear in the spot, other young Clydesdales, including an 8-month-old and a 2-year-old, will be featured, in addition to a full hitch of eight adult horses.

2013 A MILESTONE YEAR

The Clydesdales celebrate a major milestone in 2013 – the 80th anniversary of their association with Anheuser-Busch. The Budweiser Clydesdales have been an integral part of Anheuser-Busch's heritage since April 7, 1933, and their strength and majesty symbolize Budweiser quality as well as integrity, achievement, success, perfection and team spirit. They were formally introduced to celebrate the repeal of Prohibition for beer.

"The symbol has become synonymous with Budweiser — the quality that goes into the beer, as well as the time, energy and passion we put into taking care of the horses," Knapper said.

How is the baby Clydesdale featured in the commercial doing? Both mother, 7-year-old Darla, and baby are doing well, reports John Soto , supervisor of the breeding operations at Warm Springs Ranch in mid-Missouri.

"We have had two foals born so far this year, and they're both doing very well," Soto said.

"We take great pride in each and every one of our horses, and Warm Springs Ranch is a great home," Knapper said. "The Budweiser Clydesdales are the envy of the equine world. We treat them like royalty, and they are among the best-cared-for animals in the world."

Anheuser-Busch has about 200 Clydesdales in its herd, with about half of them at Warm Springs Ranch in Cooper County.

About Warm Springs RanchWarm Springs Ranch features a 25,000-square-foot breeding barn with a veterinary lab and 10 pastures, each with a customized, walk-in shelter and free-flowing water dispensers. The farm sits on 300-plus acres of land, allowing the Clydesdales plenty of room to exercise and roam.

Dedicated staff is on site around the clock to ensure the baby Clydesdales are welcomed into the world in comfort and safety. Those Clydesdales born with the proper markings for a Budweiser Clydesdale – a bay coat, a blaze of white on the face, four white stocking feet, and a black mane and tail – have a future spot on one of the traveling hitches.

The "Know-it-All" Named Worst Super Bowl Party Guest, New Survey Finds

Few things can detract from the fun of Super Bowl Sunday, but a new survey reveals that some big game party guests may find themselves uninvited next year. The survey, conducted by CouponCabin.com, reveals the worst Super Bowl party guests, with the "know-it-all" – the one who knows all there is to know about football, food and the commercials – topping the list. This survey was conducted online nationwide by Harris Interactive on behalf of Coupon Cabin Jan. 14-16, 2013, among 2,050 adults ages 18 and older.

While the know-it-all is the worst party guest for 52 percent of U.S. adults, a variety of other unwelcome Super Bowl shindig attendees made the list:
  • The remote dominator – the one who won't stop controlling the volume, changing the settings and flipping channels – 41 percent
  • The social butterfly – the one who doesn't watch the game and doesn't stop talking – 38 percent
  • The super fan – the team's biggest fan who doesn't let you forget it by showing up decked out in his/her favorite team's gear and shoots off stats left and right – 21 percent
  • The dieter – the one counting calories on one of the most celebrated days of junk food – 18 percent
  • The commercial watcher – the one who only pays attention during the commercials – 13 percent
No matter who shows up at the door for Super Bowl parties this year, there's bound to be a lot of them. Sixty-one percent of U.S. adults said they plan to watch the Super Bowl this year, up from 56 percent last year. Men are significantly more likely to watch the Super Bowl at 70 percent, compared to 52 percent of women.

"The popularity of the Super Bowl is increasing, but some are turned off by all the buildup," said Jackie Warrick , senior savings adviser at CouponCabin.com. "In fact, six-in-ten people we surveyed feel there is too much hype around the Super Bowl. It's important to keep it all in perspective, especially if you're planning to spend money hosting a party, traveling to see your team, or wagering on the outcome of the game."

Opening its doors on Fridays 8pm till 11:00pm, Thrillvania has added even more thrills, chills and mind-boggling spooktacular dioramas this year, making it Hauntworld Magazine's number one pick for Scariest Haunted House in America.
A veritable smorgasbord of creatively themed indoor and outdoor haunts, Thrillvania combines elaborate, movie quality sets, pyrotechnics, giant spiders, complex animatronics and live monsters that come at you from all sides in six amazing attractions on nearly 50 haunted acres. From their flagship World Famous Verdun Manor to Cassandra's three-dimensional psychedelic Labyrinth of Terror, the haunt literally has something for everyone from 2 to 92.
The labor of love of haunted industry icon Lance Pope, Thrillvania started out in 1996 with just Verdun Manor, 8000 square feet of decaying mansion whose living room is a "dying room," where skeletons play a ragtime waltz on the piano and ominous, macabre decor is the order of the day. Lance's mother Sue continues to run Thrillvania since his untimely death in 2002, and this year she's really done Lance proud!
Carpenters, set designers, creative artists and evil geniuses have all been working the graveyard shift, adding more footage, more carnage, more dark humor and things that go bump in the night to get Thrillvania ready for the 2012 season.  From the thick foggy swamps of the Voodoo Bayou to Sam Hain's chilling Trail of Torment, the eerie darkness of Thorn Hall and the rabid clowns of Cassandra's Labyrinth of Terror (something you might want to avoid if you have a fear of clowns), the illusions, special effects and animatronics are hairier, scarier and more electrifying than ever before.
For younger guests and fraidy cats, Granny Lupus' Seance Theatre supplies a tamer set of thrills, and a midway with games and refreshments is always a safe place to hide out.  But for the bravest of the foolhardy, Verdun Manor is still the haunt to die for, and people literally run out the back door screaming - that is, if they manage to make it out at all.  Enter at your peril!
Open every weekend through the 3rd of November plus Halloween. Go to www.Thrillvania.com for times.
Thrillvania awaits, just east of Dallas on a dark country road.  Are you ready?

Celebrate International Frugal Fun Day, Oct. 6

Saving money isn't always easy, but putting aside a few dollars here and there can add up. International Frugal Fun Day, October 6, is the perfect time to begin the habit of making small adjustments so you can have a frugal fun night and put the savings toward something even bigger later.

Here are some suggestions on how to be frugal but still have fun.

Rent a movie. Before spending a small fortune to see a recent release, rent a movie you forgot to see before it left theaters. Spend $15 on the rented movie and snacks from the grocery store and put the remaining money in your savings account. What would have been a $45 date night is now a frugal movie night.

Savings: $30 on the cost of movie tickets and theatre snacks

Take a picnic to a public park. Instead of spending your play money to go out to eat all the time, pack up a picnic basket and head to a nearby park with your loved ones. Enjoy the outdoors by bringing a ball, kite or frisbee so you can play after lunch. Many state parks require a small fee, but most local public parks are completely free. A day in the sun is the perfect time to save for a rainy day, so deposit the money you would have spent eating out straight to your savings account.

Savings: $40 on the cost of an appetizer, two entrees, and drinks at a restaurant

Visit the museum and zoo on free days. Many entertaining destinations like these have a designated day each month for the public to enter at a free or reduced rate. Instead of paying around $30 for two adults to be admitted, with a little planning you can check out American Indian relics, paintings and animals for little or nothing.

Savings: $30 on the cost of admission

Take a bike ride. Who decided exercise had to be boring? Take a new bike path or explore a neighborhood you've always wanted to see. You'll find out more about the area in which you live and make yourself more fit in the process.

Savings: $5 on the cost of gas

Participate in a seasonal tradition, visit a pumpkin patch. Fall, food and fun—you can't go wrong. Take some friends to pick pumpkins, and later, spend the evening baking pumpkin pie. If you pull the money for pumpkins out of your grocery budget, you will have spent no money on entertainment at all.

Savings: $0 total—but your monthly budget now allows $5 more for entertainment!

By participating in a little frugal fun, you can work toward your savings goal without radically changing your lifestyle; if you do one of the ideas mentioned each weekend, you can save your way to something even more fun, like an island getaway. Make sure to tell everyone on the beach how you did it.
